Hello everyone, I'm new here, but I read this forum for over a year. So I'd like to share with you about my
joy .
I mostly cultivated exotic fruit plants and this year I mostly cultivated palms and other exotic plants.
Something about my climate conditions: I am from the Czech Republic, near the metropolis of south Moravia, Brno. USDA zone 6b, This year, the lowest temperature was -24 ° C in January
, high near +36 ° C in July. This winter (2010/11) was coldest -17.6 ° C and that just today .
And here are some of my plants:
Butia capitata:
(http://s3.postimage.org/irqpnu9w/DSCF8847.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/irqpnu9w/)
Phoenix canariensis:
(http://s3.postimage.org/iu4plvyc/DSCF7969.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/iu4plvyc/)
Brahea armata:

Bismarckia nobilis:
(http://s3.postimage.org/iuhxwnwk/DSCF7975.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/iuhxwnwk/)
Jubaea chilensis:
(http://s3.postimage.org/iv04thc4/DSCF7978.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/iv04thc4/)
Washingtonia filifera:

Chamaerops humilis 'cerifera':

All palms:

Nice collection Rade!
Welcome from Makarska and I hope we ll see more from you pretty soon.

Trachycarpus fortunei under snow:
(http://s4.postimage.org/2di1vhwro/DSCF9242.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/2di1vhwro/)
Trachy was wrapped in cloth and heating cable:
(http://s4.postimage.org/2dj8vgxlw/DSCF9245.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/2dj8vgxlw/)
Then I put the big bag on a palm:

Nice collection Rade!
Welcome from Makarska and I hope we ll see more from you pretty soon.
Thank You :0648:.
I was in Makarska in September/October 2008. Specifically in Baško Polje, Baška Voda and Makarska, It is paradise :0648: .
Chamaerops humilis in soil:
(http://s2.postimage.org/2fjru1sx0/DSCF7976.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/2fjru1sx0/)
I made her a wooden box:
(http://s4.postimage.org/2dlg99lb8/DSCF8840.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/2dlg99lb8/)
I wrapped palm on cloth and shining Christmas snake  :
(http://s4.postimage.org/2dloiybs4/DSCF9249.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/2dloiybs4/)
(http://s4.postimage.org/2dlyg6eqs/DSCF9246.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/2dlyg6eqs/)
And it's done:
(http://s3.postimage.org/ihl7w550/DSCF9286.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/ihl7w550/)
Shining snake works great with today's -17.6 ° C in the box was almost +20 ° C, and under palm wrap +30 ° C . So more problem was high temperature :icon_lol:. I turned on the heater at temperatures below -8 ° C.

Vrlo lijepa .

Welcome Rade! You have nice collection. How you manage to protect all those tropics?
Thanks . I constantly cultivate outside Trachycarpus fortunei and Chamaerops humilis, other palms are in frost-free room (other Trachies, cerifera) or in wintergarden (Bismarckia, Brahea,...)
I'm going to land out some other palms next year, more exotic .
And when the temperature falls below -8°C, I must be on guard .
Dobro došli Rade :icon_mrhappy:
Zdravíčko :gy:
Sve Česi naučili hrvatski .

Treehugger, Zeaxland, thank You friends  .
-
Welcome Rade :sretan:!
Nice pictures, and nice palm protection ! Temperature of 20 C / 30 C under protection, could be problem, because it can brake palm dormancy (sleeping). Try to install some sort of thermostat, to automatically swich of your heating cable on lower temperatures.
-
Hi, thanks .
I know, it's very high temperature and it is certainly a shock for the plant, so I'm unwound the lighting snake from palm, and I placed it in a box to avoid touching the palm. That's better, the temperature in the box is already around 15 ° C. But it is true that this method is more suitable for wintering Howea, perhaps . Thanks for Your interest  .

Welcome Rade :sretan:
-
Welcome Rade, nice collection you got there, with these temperatures i think you are a pro in protection.
Greets from Netherlands.

Nice trachys, they make it... You do not have to worry about them anymore.
-
Thanks Yonex . I believe, that's ok :sun:.
-
good these palms have spilt the winter with something have protected
-
don't worry rade, these are minor damages at your palms. one of mine trachy is completly defoliated, but i hope it will survive somehow. silly me , i wanted to have some pics of trachy in snow, and after i was too lasy to cover it when temps drop low. this one is on north side of the house and it is exposed to strong north winds plus some temps below 0 C = defoliation. the other one , at south exposure, has just minor damages like yours.
so do i have some seedlings of yucca and agave. i think the same species like yours (y. thompsoniana, glauca, elata, baccata, brevifolia jaegeriana, carnerosana, faxoniana, brevifolia, and agave ut. kaibabensis and neomexicana -these two are most cold hardy agave there is). just the top cold hardy ones, so that they don't need to have extra protection in winter. all hardy -18 to -30 C.
