Delonix Regia - will they survive?
« u: Siječanj 31, 2021, 19:40:56 poslijepodne »
New to this forum. Hello everyone!

Has anyone tried Delonix Regia, "Flamboyant tree". I'm currently growing some seeds of this tree. The plan is to put them in the ground this spring.
Planted the seeds in November and they are now about 20 cm tall.
The seeds were very hard to germinate but some hydrogen peroxide did the trick.

Has anyone tried this tree or seen one in Mediterranean region?

I have a small summerhouse near Dubrovnik. Trying to maintain it from 3000 km away...
Newbe in gardening in mediterranean climate.

I've seen it in Egypt but I don't remember seeing it on the Adriatic. However, Dubrovnik has the nicest climate in the area so if you plant it in a protected, sunny, south-facing location, you have a better than 50% chance that it will grow well.

So you think the success rate may be as high as 50 %. Perfect that I have 20 plants then. 😎

From what I have read about them they grow super fast reaching 3 meter in 2 years. I'm hoping they will get a fat stem until the first really cold winter hits them.

They do have a good chance in a spot where they would be protected from the wind. The north-eastern wind (bura) during the winter is the main enemy of subtropical and tropical plants on the Adriatic. I think Dubrovnik did relatively well in February 2012 when the rest of the coast recorded significant frosts, but I know there were some frosts in January 2017.

Maybe we should organise a gofundme or something to make the Urals and Carpathians taller in order to keep cold Siberian air as far away as possible.
