Phoenix canariensis

Location: Hendaye (Basque),Spain.
Comment: In 1985 Europe experienced the winter of the century; The Phoenix palms in the Basque town of Hendaye, on the French/Spanish border had all the fronds of all the Phoenix burned and brown and they looked quite dead by spring; all survived and continue to flourish despite the -13C low.

Phoenix canariensis
Size: Adult (in reproductive age)
Freeze: Min:-12°C / 10.4°F
Damage: 70% Leaf-burn
Location: Ancona, Italy.
Soil: Dry.
Comment: Palm was badly damaged. In the area several 100 year old palms have survived -10C to -14C. Winters have usually 20+ days of frost which is superficial, not deep into soil and melted by 10am. Winters are dry not to cause disease. No sudden weather change, cold comes slowly, so growth has slowed.

Phoenix canariensis
Freeze: Min:-12°C / 10.4°F
Damage: Unknown/Survived
Location: Provence, France.
Soil: Dry.
Comment: On the coast of S. France there's an impressive number of P. canariensis in all sizes. They have survived freezes to -12C on several occasions and when in good health, and provided it had been dry long enough in advance of the freeze. They have proved much hardier than generally stated or expected.
