Comment: Planted as a 5 gallon plant in 1970, it grew in my backyard shrugging off twenty winters and developing a thick permanent trunk. Unfortunately, in Dec 1990 I was out of town, a coldsnap hit dropping temp down to 5F and killing the tree.

Comment: Palm has been planted in spring 1996 when 4 years old. It has been defoliated twice (winter 96/97 and 98/99) when temp. dropped below -10C. By fall 97, the palm had 6 new leaves. Since March 99, three new leaves have appeared.

Comment: This beautiful (now 7') specimen endured this temp New Years 1997 when Knoxville experienced snow and ice. The spring brought forth vigorous new growth, only the spike frond had some discoloration at the point where it emerged from the trunk. The plant was moved last summer to a new location in West Knoxville, and grew vigorously.

Comment: B. capitata outside since 1981 measured over 2m by 1996. The severe winter of 96-97, lasted 24 days with lows of -14°C, almost killed this palm. It resprouted by Aug of 97 and now has 20cm stem and 4 or 5 leaves.

Comment: Planted in my yard from a 15 gallon in 1994 and turned completely brown after a 6 degree F ( 9°F at New Bern NC (N. Carolina) airport ) freeze in Feb. 1996. The bud pulled out and it was necessary to cut the trunk back to solid tissue. By late summer 1996 it had completely recovered. In 1999 the palm is producing a bumper crop of seed.

Comment: This is a report for all Butia capitata this winter in South West France, all the Butia capitata in natural soil have survived with just the end of the leaves burned. We had 5 nigth running with minimum temperature between -12°c to -14°c, and 2 days running were the t° was never above -5°c (in the shadow) and only 0°c in the sun (Butia location).

Comment: Update to my previous post. The palm survived winter, and accidental pulling of healthy spear but this proved to be its undoing. Though was recovering well, apparently latter injury opened it up to infection, entire crown suddenly rotted & pulled late June. Due to recovery had stopped fungicide use. Will try again with new plant in better site.
