Gevgelija-Valandovo Wine District
Gevgelija-Valandovo Wine District covers the territory under grapevines in the southernmost part of the Republic of Macedonia, along the Vardar River and around Lake Dojran. It also includes the vineyards in the area of the Valandovo and Gevgelija municipalities.
This wine district is under the strong influence of the mediterranean climate, and it is only in the winter period that the influence of the continental winds can be felt along the Vardar Valley. The annual rainfall is between 536 mm and 745 mm per square meter, and in the summer there are frequent periodic droughts when it is necessary to carry out additional watering. Most of the wine district is covered by the irrigation system. The majority of grapevine plantations are on gently sloping terrains or in the plains of the Vardar River, with varying aspects favourable for grapevine growing. In this wine district, some of the grapevine plantations are located at the lowest altitude of 50 metres. The vineyards are mostly on diluvial-coarse soil, alluvial soils (along the reaches of the Vardar), eroded cinnamonic soil, and less frequently on brown soil.
